Disability Legislation in Practice

A Single Country Project for Iraq

March 26-April 1, 2025

SACIV welcomed distinguished professionals from Iraq to San Antonio to explore the city’s leading organizations and initiatives promoting disability inclusion and advancing disability legislation. During their visit, the delegates met with local experts and organizations to discuss and learn about community efforts supporting accessibility, accommodation, and inclusion.

At UTSA, representatives shared the university’s commitment to ADA and Section 504 compliance, highlighting Student Disability Services and special education resources. Aid the Silent presented its programs supporting children and teens with hearing loss through hearing aids, speech therapy, and ASL lessons.

The group also visited The Arc of San Antonio, which enhances the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and toured the Foundation School for Autism, an early intervention charter school for students with autism.

At North East ISD, delegates learned about accessibility services and the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf. They also explored Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first Ultra-Accessible™ theme park, and its inclusive sister programs.

Finally, Texas A&M University–San Antonio shared its disability support services and the TU CASA program, offering students with intellectual disabilities an 18-month postsecondary experience focused on academics, career development, and independent living.
