Dr. René Zenteno brings a combination of scholarly expertise, high-level administrative leadership experience, and international engagement that aligns well with the San Antonio Council for International Visitors' mission.

He is a Professor of Sociology and Demography at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), with extensive experience shaping institutional strategy, faculty governance, and international initiatives. His prior roles as Vice Provost for International Initiatives at UTSA, Executive Director of the University of Texas System’s ConTex program, and Executive Director of the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies at the University of California San Diego, demonstrate a strong track record in building cross-border academic partnerships, particularly between the United States and Mexico.

His research is deeply international and policy-relevant, focusing on migration, social inequality, and demographic change across the U.S. and Latin America. He has contributed to globally recognized research collaborations and the dissemination of data that inform public understanding and policy debates on migration. In his role as Under Secretary of Population, Migration, and Religious Affairs in Mexico from 2010 to 2012, he gained invaluable experience in policy development, international collaboration, crisis management, and diplomatic relations. 

Dr. Zenteno also brings experience in convening diverse stakeholders (academics, policymakers, and international partners) around complex global issues. His work in organizing academic programs, leading strategic initiatives, and mentoring students reflects a commitment to internationalization in education and community engagement.
